TFSA Contribution Room Calculator

OUTSIDERTRADING.CA · 2026 EDITION

Estimate your TFSA contribution room across all your accounts. Start with totals or enter dated transactions to check recontributions. All amounts are Canadian dollars. Figures are verified through 2026; no future TFSA limits are assumed.

Your TFSA contribution room

The full annual limit applies in a year you turn 18 and are resident at some point. No annual room accrues for a full non-resident year. This tool assumes a valid SIN. Do not contribute before your 18th birthday or while non-resident; separate taxes may apply. For mid-year residency changes, check transaction dates with your records.

Totals cannot identify past excess contributions, their removal, or the order of withdrawals and recontributions. A positive result does not establish that every transaction was within your room.

How TFSA contribution room works

Room starts in the year you turn 18 and are resident in Canada, no earlier than 2009. You do not need to open a TFSA to accumulate room. Unused room carries forward. Your room is shared across every TFSA you hold.

The 2026 annual limit is $7,000. The historical annual limits total $109,000 through 2026 for someone eligible every year since 2009, before contributions and withdrawals. That is not a lifetime contribution cap.

Ordinary withdrawals are added back on January 1 of the following year. Replacing a withdrawal in the same year uses other available room and may create an excess. Qualifying direct transfers between your TFSAs do not use room; withdrawing and redepositing yourself is different.

The totals estimate is: eligible annual limits − all contributions + ordinary withdrawals made before 2026. Withdrawals in 2026 are deliberately excluded until 2027. The dated method checks contributions against room at the time of each entry. If an excess is detected, results are withheld: resolving an excess and its tax requires more than this simplified model.

TFSA calculator FAQs

Can I rely only on CRA My Account?

Reconcile it with your own financial institution records. CRA information is updated after issuers report and can omit recent transactions. Never contribute solely because an online estimate shows room.

What happens if I over-contribute?

Generally, a tax of 1% of the highest excess TFSA amount in each month applies while an excess exists. This calculator flags a potential excess; it does not calculate the tax or determine how a correction should be reported. A later withdrawal or new annual room does not erase tax already incurred.

What if my records are incomplete?

Uncheck the records confirmation and results will be hidden. Totals alone cannot reconstruct historical excesses, and annual totals cannot establish the timing of same-year recontributions. Residency changes, special distributions, exempt contributions and excess-removal adjustments need a separate review.

Do investment gains create extra room?

No. Gains inside a TFSA are not contributions, and losses do not restore room. An ordinary withdrawal of investment gains is generally restored as room the next calendar year.

What are the historical limits?

2009–2012: $5,000 each year; 2013–2014: $5,500; 2015: $10,000; 2016–2018: $5,500; 2019–2022: $6,000; 2023: $6,500; 2024–2026: $7,000.
